sure - he pushed off Bryon Russell to clear the shot - should've been called for the foul.
Mike Mathis, the former head of the NBA referees union and a league official for 26 years said rogue referee Tim Donaghy was able to slip through the cracks because refereeing has gotten worse and cited the final shot of Michael Jordan's Chicago Bulls career as an example where a player's reputation prevented a proper call.
Mathis referenced the pivotal shot in Game 6 of the 1998 Finals by Jordan against the Utah Jazz that gave the Bulls their sixth and final championship in the Jordan era. Many observers maintain Jordan committed an offensive foul, but it was not called because of Jordan's stature and reputation.
"Remember when Jordan hit that winning shot? I'm going to give you exactly what the commentators said: 'What a great move by Michael.' Was that a great move or was that an offensive foul? There was no question it was a push-off. No buts about it. The only buts you can have is, 'Well, it was Michael Jordan.' That was a defining moment.
"The video tape would never lie," Mathis said. "Here's what could have happened. The referee makes the call and it's, 'No, no. How could he do that? It was Michael Jordan.' "

Aahhh, the most clutch shot in the history of the NBA Finals, and it was on the road, game 6, after the Bulls choked it away in game 5 and let Malone do whatever he wanted to in the paint. That shot will forever be tattooed in the memories of Jazz fans all over the state of Utah. I still have the picture frame of that shot as MJ went up over Bryon Russell (yeah he pushed off, so what?) and you can see every fans reaction during that moment. One guy had his hands over his head and he was frowning. Another guy covered his face. This lady had a sad look as she looked up at the score. You can feel the tension just by looking at the picture. Damn Mike, you should've stayed retired! That was the best way to go out...as a champion, game winning shot, on the road. I still wonder: Had he missed that shot and we go to a game 7, would the Bulls finally have lost against a much better team or would Jordan and the Bulls step up to the challenge of playing their first game 7 in the Finals on the road? HMMMM.....
