By "close to the strip", I take it that you don't want to be on the strip? A clean, comfortable hotel/casino that I recommend, off-strip, is the Palace Station. It's about a mile off strip on Sahara Ave. Accessible by shuttle or foot (if you're a walker) and not too expensive to boot. Other more expensive casino/hotels that aren't too far off-strip are the Palms, the Rio and the Hard Rock. These are more expensive but, you're also getting better accommodations and ambiance. On the strip I recommend, Planet Hollywood, Mirage, TI, Monte Carlo, the Stratosphere and MGM Grand. Prices are reasonable to moderately expensive. Places to avoid: Tropicana- undergoing renovations, Imperial Palace- old, dingy and small, Riviera: old, needs updating badly, Sahara- see Riviera, Circus Circus- only if you're "family oriented" and don't mind the noise, kids, dingy conditions and bad food. Downtown, the Golden Nugget is prime; avoid nearby, local hotels unless you like it risky. Check out the sites below.

The Orleans is one of my favorites
http://www.orleanscasino.com
They have a free shuttle to the strip & to the Gold Coast.
Gold Coast
http://www.goldcoastcasino.com
free shuttle to Orleans & strip
Stratosphere

The Strat is at the far North end of the strip, but the strip bus(Deuce) stops right in front.
The above hotels are the generally the best value.
I'm not a hotel snob at all, a clean "inexpensive" two or three star hotel is fine by me, but, the Imperial Palace is not a nice place to stay. >You can do so much better for the same $$$

Personally, I've stayed at the Luxor (the black pyramid shaped hotel/casino) more than once and found that it is the most reasonably priced for a 4 star hotel. It was extremely nice and is on the strip. If you're looking for inexpensive and not fancy, Circus, Circus would be your best bet.
Check online for hotel packages if you're looking for something cheaper. Prices vary by days of the week and seasons so it's hard to recommend based on this. Have a wonderful time. It's my favorite vacation destination.

I prefer the Imperial Palace because of its location (center strip) and price. It's walking distance to the Bellagio, Wynn, Cesears Palace, Harrah's, and others. It's a full size resort casino with all the basic room features. Nothing overly fancy, but definitely not dirty. Besides, how much time are you going to spend in your room anyway?
