expandsss the brackets first
-32x-16+10=-42
-32x-6=-42
-32x=-36

Distribute the 8, which means multiply it by both terms inside the parenthesis:
8(-4x - 2) + 10 = -42
-32x - 16 + 10 = -42
combine the like terms
-32x - 6 = -42
add 6 to both sides
-32x = -36
divide both sides by -32
x = -36/ -32
simplify
x = 36/32
x = 18/16
x = 9/8 or 1 and 1/8

8(-4x-2)+10=-42
=> -32x-16+10=-42
=> -32x=-42+16-10
=> -32x = -36 => x= -36 / -32 = 9/8

well, just to let you know...some of the previous answers are incorrect....very incorrect. hehe. as an algebra II student, here is what i got:
x= 9/8
...first i distributed and got -32x-16+10=-42. then i got -32-6=-42 (i did -16+10). i got rid of the -6 and got -32x=-36. then i divided the -32 on both sides and so x=-36/-32. reduce that and you'll get 9/8.
that's all! just remember...PEMDAS.

First, distribute the 8(-4x-2) to get
-32x-16+10=-42
Then add up the like terms on the left
-32x-6=-42
Add 6 to both sides
-32x=-36
divide both sides by -32 to get
x = 1.125

to solve for x, distribute the 8 through the parentheses,
-32x-16+10=-42 then combine like terms
-32x-6=-42 now you isolate the linear term (-32x) by add 6 to both sides of the equation(properties of equality)
-32x=-36 divide both sides by -32 to solve for x
you can leave it in fraction form (9/8) or decimal 1.125.
there you go.

distributive property
[8*(-4x) + 8*(-2) ] + 10
then variables on one side and numbers on the other
8*(-4x) = -42 -10 - 8*(-2)
then solve for x
