What bothers me is that these were celebrity crimes and they don't come close to many of the real crimes that occurred where thousands, even millions of people were massacred. Where is Rwanda, Darfur, the Holocaust, the 1915 massacre of Armenians, the killing fields of Cambodia, and the Crusades?

I don't agree at all that this is a list of the worst crimes of the century! It doesn't seem right to compare art theft to brutal murders. These may the most publicized crimes of the century.

Guess the Holocaust doesn't hold a candle to Fatty Arbuckle. One that is not political, Rwanda, Killing fields, Cultural revolution is

"Andrei Chikatilo - aka The Rostov Ripper and Hannibal Lecter ; killed 52 women and children throughout the many countries of the former Soviet Union before being arrested, convicted, and executed in 1994"

It depends on their criteria. You might not agree with the focus on celebrity crimes, but they were given great media coverage and did have an impact on society. But, if you consider worst to mean most violent or heinous, then I'd disagree with many of the art-related crimes. I am glad they had the sense not to make oj pimpson the #1 crime.

If the criteria for worst is the impact it had on society, I'd have to include the Watergate break in.
