i read a pretty good one recently set in the 1800's called Claiming the Courtesan. I also liked Julia Latham's Thrill of the Knight.

Gwen Rowley is writing a Knights of the Round Table series right now that is pretty good. Lancelot is the first one, the second is Geraint, and the Gawain book doesn't come out until October I believe. all of these are romance novels.

"A Certain Slant of Light" by Laura Whitcomb.
I always recommend this book because it's such an original romantic tale. It does take place in the present, but the characters are from different time periods.

Sounds confusing but once you read the book it completely falls into place.

Edit: I agree with the other poster, "Plainsong" is a great book!!

These are past the 1900s and very modern, but you might want to try any books by Meg Cabot. They're really cool, and great reading for teens. Hope this helped!

Its not in the romance section nor before the 1900's...but if you like books about falling in love etc. try God Shaped Hole. It is a cute story.

Plainsong by Kent Haruf. It's not much of a romantic book, but is truly inspiring & sweet. It's also before the 1900s.

Try Libba Bray's two books, "A Great and Terrible Beauty" and "Rebel Angels." They are the first two in a fantasy-themed trilogy (the third is due out at Christmas) and are set in the late 1800s Victorian era. There is some romance mixed in, especially in the second book.

Read the synopsis for them at www.amazon.com and see what you think.

I highly recommend Gabriel Garcia Marquez's "Love In The Time Of Cholera." Of course you would say, Garcia Marquez is a contemporary author but this book actually sets in the 1800s. Don't miss it.
