Well, one would have to define pornography, wouldn't one, to answer this question? I cannot take it upon my self to do that, (define it, not answer the question. I am more than happy to answer the question by giving you my opinion.)

What comes to my mind are the Kama Sutra and the mosaics and murals discovered at Pompeii. But there were probably pictures that our current society would consider pornographic predating those, like from Babylon or Greece.

Do you know that when Pompeii was first professionally excavated many depictions in murals and mosaics were defaced because of the discomfort of the excavators? They were just art to the original inhabitants and symbols of fertility and good luck, as with many orgiastic religions.

The pictures discovered in the brothels, portraying sexual acts, now are considered advertisements, or maybe menus, giving prices.

At any rate, why is the easiest part; because some people, especially men, enjoy and are aroused looking at pictures like that. Men are more visual than women, I think. I prefer to read about a steamy sex scene, but many men prefer to watch it.

Humanity invented pornography. Pornography is a universal, like music and language. Heterosexual men (and homosexuals, even) are in admiration of the female form and that form comes up in human art. So no one person or set of people can lay claim to the genesis of pornography.

I think people have had it for centuries, because people are obsessed with the human form and depicting it during sex is something I think that artists do. The Kama Sutra was like porn, but really isn't more like to help your sex life with different positions? I don't know, maybe I'm thinking of the one by Cosmopolitan. Anyways, today porn is now just something to get off on and is one of the most digusting forms of media out there. I think sexualy pictures wasn't "porn" until the 1800's, but then again I'm not sure. However, I know the sick people who say pornography is art are severly mistaken.

I don't know, I'm guessing pornography has always been around in one form or another. It just wasn't as accepted as it is today. If you can call it accepted. Think about it. There is naked people on the walls in the ancient caves and pyramids. So I'm sure it has been around forever and it's just getting nastier. Good question.

Egyptians and phalic obsession Temple of Karnak (16th century BC). Venus of Willendorf is another example (20,000+ obviously BC). By worshipping these pornographic images, early man and women thought it would help with fertility. Beowulf is pretty raunchy too.

It's as old as painting. Pornographic scenes have been found painted on walls excavated at Pompeii.
Why, probably to stimulate sexual passion or bring back pleasant memories.

Porn has always been a constant ever since human kind has existed. you can find it in ancient caveman drawings on the walls and in ancient greece, it just wasn't as prevalant as it is today. to answer your question though, the first PRINTED porn did not come about until 1845 when they used to be printed on post cards and distributed by businesses to their male clientele.

why? because every human is in some way effected sexually by porn. in those days it might have been to ensure repeat customer.
