Area = width by length. Area = 4 2/3 yards x 1 2/5 yards
Area = 4 4/15 sq. yards

4 2/3 yards = 14/3 yards
1 2/5 yards = 7/5 yards
It's always a good idea to write out the formula.
Area = Length * Width
Area = 14/3 * 7/5
Area = 98/15 yards squared
98/15 simplifies down to 6 8/15 yards. Don't forget that area is always squared.

Change the two numbers to fractions and then multiply them out

4 2/3 = 14/3
1 2/5 = 7/5

14/3 * 7/5 = 98/15 square yards

That is equal to 6 8/15 square yards

Change the 4 2/3 to an irregular fraction (14/3) and change the second dimension to another one (7/5) then convert both to the same denomination. Do you know how to do that? It means the bottom number has to be the same for both fractions. In this case, 15 is the lowest number that both of these denominators go into, so you multiply the numerator of the first fraction by five and the numberator of the second fraction by 3. That gives you two fractions with a common denominator. Multiply them together to get the square yardage, then reduce to a regular fraction.

14/3 * 7/5 = 98/15 or 6 8/15 square yards

4 2/3 is 14/3, and 1 2/5 is 7/5...

14/3 * 7/5 = 98 / 15

...and because 98 / 15 can't be put in simpler terms, your answer is 98 / 15 sq yards (or 6 8/15 sq yards)

That's a really stupid problem...people don't measure that way. Especially a backyard...it would be measured in feet and inches.
