You do not have to get your modem from your ISP.

I know it seems a little confusing now but there are only a few simple rules to every internet connection.
Whichever cable provider you will decide to use will establish their connection with you through a cable modem by themselves by coming to your house and connecting your modem. . Thus, they bring the modem with them.
They will want to show you at least 2 different types to choose from.
so I will suggest not to buy one on your own until you can verify with them that you NEED to buy your own. If they did, they will confirm it with you before they will come to install your connection.
Since they are a company, they will be able to purchase these modems cheaper by bulk than you can.
They will offer to either rent it to you by month or give it free or sell it to you
---------------------------------------------
Here is a typical list
Comcast Cable $19.99/m Cable/6Mbps $50 cash back and free cable modem
Road Runner Cable $29.95/m Cable/5Mbps Free Standard Installation, $40 Cash Back
Charter $19.95/m Cable/5Mbps Free Motorola Cable Modem, No Contract
Adelphia $23.95/m Cable/5Mbps Free Motorola Cable Modem, No Contract
Earthlink Cable $26.95/m Cable/5Mbps Free antivirus and anti-spyware tools, top-rated customer support
Cox Communications $19.95/m Cable/5Mbps Free Self Installation, and a Motorola Cable Modem \=============================================
Do your research and ask for these details at every cable provider in your city or town. Then decide on the best package. Dont forget to also compare prices with the DSL/ADSL providers.
=========
Make sure they install only the best modems , not used or reconditioned., because those might break down in a few months.of use.

A modem wont really make a difference it just depends on the speed you pay for.
