Making fire had already been invented and surveys showed people weren't interested in the Thigh Master yet.
More interesting is why Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone. He was actually trying to invent an artificial ear (or at least an electronic hearing aid). His wife and his mother (two different women) were deaf. Later his wife would ask "Why don't the kids ever call?" and he'd remind her "Ye couldna talk to 'em if they did, your deaf self!" and he'd end up sleeping on the sofa (plaid I'm guessing for his Scots heritage) for a couple of days.

He probably did it because he saw tremendous profit potential in the invention. Edison, it is said, invented nothing, unless it had some commercial value.

It does seem odd since he was deaf but he was an inventor and that's what they do. Since he wasn't always deaf maybe he remembered the sound of music and wanted to make it possible for others to hear it all of the time.

I don't know why, but I do recall reading that he said it was his personal favorite of his many inventions. The man was amazing.
