I'm 15 and the place I used to work for broke 2 well known violations: working more then 8 hours a day, and working past allowed time(where I live its 9pm, and I was commonly stuck there until 11pm-12am). This place is such a corrupt, unholy business, and I've decided someone needs to stand up to this place. I know I have the right to sue, but I don't know where to begin as I have no experience in this. Can someone give me some steps or advice to put me on the right path?

You can start with the State Labor Board but a couple of items that you need to know.

Working more than 8 hours is not necessarily illegal as long as they are giving you overtime pay, normally 1 &1/2 times your hourly rate, even working until midnight may not be illegal depending upon curfew laws in your city.

Now having said that, if you were working while in school (back at school after summer vacation) you should have a work permit issued by your school and signed by your parents. In California a student is allowed to work no more than 8 hours per day, school work is equal to a normal job so if you are in school 5 hours per day you can only work 3 hours per day.

Now as far as suing them, unfortunately you do not have the right to sue because you are only 15, your parents can sue on your behalf. Have your parents talk to an attorney and see if he thinks that you might have a case.

Good luck to you
