Meditation...or if you have a good herbal doctor [I am blessed to have the best], he/she can make you some "sleepy time" tea. Not sure of everything that is in it, but I know it involves chamomile, kudzu and lavender.
Try not to stimulate your body [excercise, stressful activities, etc.] for at least a few hours before bed. Take a hot shower or bath. Sip on some kind of tea, caffine free of course, and then meditate. If you still cannot fall asleep, try reading. It tires your eyes out & makes it easier to fall asleep.
Sweet dreams!

One thing that always helps me is taking a 30-40 minute nap around 4 or 5pm. I've been a night owl my entire life, and recently I started in the 8-5 career track. It took some adjusting to be able to stay up late (not as late as before, like 3am) and still be able to function at work. It will take some time to adjust to the new schedule. If you are looking for a product to help you through the first few weeks of your transition phase, try 5 Hour Energy. It's a newer product that literally picks you up for 5 hours and doesn't crash you at the end like Monster, Red Bull or Sobe No Fear do (or basically any energy drink). Hope this helps!

There are many things you can do to help you go to sleep without taking any medications:
1) Do not eat late into the night (past 8pm)
2) Do not have any caffeine after 6 pm (coffee, tea, chocolate, soda)
3) Do not use the bedroom for any work related activities.
4) Exercise in the afternoon or after diner.
5) If you can't go to sleep at night don't toss and turn, get up and walk around, do not watch TV.

Sex is a great way to promote sleep (I'm a guy).

I also take melatonin, 3 mg. every night. It allows me to feel sleepy at bedtime and wake up in the morning. No feeling groggy or worn out. I take Now Brand, available at most health food stores.

Sleep is so important!!

I also got tested for sleep apnea; I now use a cpap machine and I fall asleep so quickly now -- it's like being a little kid again! My head hits the pillow and I'm asleep!

Craig's List is great for cpap machines and eBay is great for nasal pillow breathing systems!

Good luck!!

Hypnotherapy can help with insomnia in a multitude of ways. For example:

* Self-hypnosis can be a great start to deal with insomnia problems. By concentrating on relaxing each part of your body as you lay in bed, you can start fighting some of the tension. You can also work on your breathing and find a mantra you can repeat to yourself to help you fall asleep each night thereafter.

* In serious cases of insomnia, looking for the help of a hypnotherapist might be best, as a professional can help you search for answers more effectively, plus give you tools on how to use your mind to deal with insomnia.

* Because insomnia is often caused by stress, hypnotherapy can be used to learn relaxation techniques, and to train the mind to slow down when your body is getting ready for sleeping. Hypnotherapy is especially useful if insomnia is caused by a "racing mind" or excessive emotional or mental arousal, where the mind simply cannot stop rushing through different subjects and trains of thought.

* Hypnotherapy can also help you understand some of the underlying causes of insomnia. Many people who suffer from insomnia don't understand why or how it's happening, and need help understanding the motives behind their anxiety and distress.

* Hypnotherapy can help re-educate the mind when it comes to insomnia. When you go to sleep expecting a relaxing night and good dreams, it is more than likely that you will get them.

People with chronic insomnia that does not respond standard treatment should consult a doctor, as there might be more serious causes behind the problem.

Milk contains an amino acid called tryptophan, that can help you sleep. Contrary to popular belief, it does not need to be "warm milk."

Some men say that masturbation (or sex) helps them sleep. If this is true, it's because this activity releases endorphins into the system, and this helps men relax.

Exercise during the day, don't drink caffeine before you sleep, wake up early, a warm glass of milk and a banana before bed, and reading an hour before sleep

When my husband and I can't sleep we'll usually throw a DVD in and watch that in bed, but the best sleep drug is sex. Whenever we can't sleep, a round of sex usually always does the trick for us. I don't know why, but it never fails.
