How do I make sure that a newly crocheted blanket is sanitary for a new born baby just born today? When I crochet it's hard for the yarn not to get on the floor and my cat wouldn't quit playing with the yarn and walking on it. What do I do to make sure baby don't get sick?

if it isnt colored (or very lightly colored), wash it first (on delicate cycle) with warm water, your ordinary washing detergent (or if you are very picky for your baby, i've seen some people use baby wash or mild soaps) and add some lemon juice (probably the juice of half a lemon is good enough). the lemon juice would act as a mild sanitizer for the baby blanket. rinse very well afterwards then wash again with warm water and detergent (again, baby wash if you want to use it). if the material is pre-shrunk, then it wouldnt have any problems if you placed it in the dryer - which kills even more germs because of the heat. if it isnt pre-shrunk and you're worried it might shrink, just air-dry it out in the sunshine. make sure it isnt misty or humid because it might create a nice comfortable environment for germs to live in.

after it is dried, run it for a while under the iron, then keep it in a clean and dry cabinet. you can now also buy hypo-allergenic and sanitary bags where you can keep your blankets until they are needed, but keeping it in a clean drawer or cabinet is good enough.

Wash the blanket with hot water, and use baby clothes detergent with no dye or perfume. Try dreft, or all has detergent for baby's clothes. Try to keep the blanket out of reach to the cat, because the baby could be allergic to cat, and won't be able to get an allergy test done until the age of 7 months. If you wash in a detergent that is for baby's clothes only then the blanket should be fine. It's recommended to wash all baby's clothes before they wear them.

Check your yarn label and see what is says about washing/drying it. Follow the label and it should turn out just fine. I do recommend using a detergent that is free of dyes and fragrances such as All free, dreft or anything for baby. Good Luck!

you don't need to sanitize it. If the cat was playing with the blanket or walking on it, it should be fine. If the cat was laying on the blanket, then I would say wash it...but if not, then...try to not be over paranoid. If you have a cat in the house, its dander is everywhere in your home and your baby will get used to it.

Baby won't get sick from it. But to reasure yourself, buy a bottle of Infant disinfectant spray and allow it to dry. My doctor recommended this for the used swing and Playpen I bought.

I think washing it in Dreft or fragrence free detergent will be plenty enough to get it clean.

Just wash it with normal laundry detergent.
