I have just discovered Yahoo answers out of necessity. I got some good answers. Then I tried to answer a few questions and I find that people are very eager to be top poster. They write two word answers that hardly answer the question. The only reason for this would be to be top poster or because they don't really care to give a detailed helpful answer. Is this for points or are these people just idiots? And why would you care about points? This isn't Speedway, you don't get anything for your points do you? Maybe some self satisfaction and the thought that you are as smart as you think you are. I don't get it. I just wanted to share and help people. I guess that makes me a stupid tree hugger then right? Quick, hurry and answer so you get your points!

I agree with you, the point system shouldn't become an encouragement for unhelpful postings, it gets that way somehow because there's no free lunch, without the points, people would probably be like: why should I bother? Why do I get in return? To make the users feel like they're not just giving and not receiving, or asking without paying, the points are given. And once we have the points, we would want more coz it feels like money in a sense- something that we can earn and spend- and with the mentality of today, people want to be rich. I think the meanings of points are one like you said, self satisfaction and two, we need to have enough points to thumb-up or thumb-down an answer. I do find the thumb-up/ thumb-down essential for Y! answers though. When I see horrible answers I just can't walk away with it without expressing my disapproval!!! I tried to earn enough points so I can give thumb-up or thumb-down, and then I became passive about earning points.

Isn't this like the "Whose Line Is It Anyway?" Game where everything is made up and the points don't matter?
Now if the points were useful, like being able to cash them in for free ringtones, I might be interested...

P.S. You are only a 'tree-hugger' if you go outside and actually hug a tree, by the way.
