During the movies, I'm fine. But afterwards I start thinking about them more and more, and I seriously start to freak out. How can I not be so scared afterwards?

Try writing a description of what frightened you or try drawing pictures of the frightful scenes. Doing these things will exorcise your fear; I guarantee it.

Here's a tip I tried when I was younger. Seemed to work, and got me interested in learning more.

Watch the movie as though you are either a reviewer or someone involved in the film. See if you can spot how the effects are done, or if you can figure them out (for example, was that flying creature CGI or an actor on a wire?) It never interfered with my enjoyment, in fact I found myself getting more into it. Some of the make up effects are cool, and if you see the actor under it..it is sometimes a great laugh. Do this s few times, and you'll find (at least I did) that though I could still get a decent scare during the movie, once it was over I was too interested in the mechanics behind it to worry about the scary stuff.

Just don't let your imaginations run wild. You need to remember that it's a movie and only a movie. When you're scared, just try to think of something else... . like for example, think of something fun that you did today, yesterday, etc. Or think of something that you'll be doing in the future. Think happy thoughts.

Try not to think about it. It happens to me all the time. Turning on all your lights works too(:Or watch something really funny afterwards and sleep with the t.v. on or something. That's what works for me. Hope that helped.

When I was young, I always told myself that a scary movie was just a frightening story imagined or concocted by some weirdo, who intended for his audiences to scream, cringe, or squirm!!

Say it is just a movie to yourself ... I know this happens to me a lot and I hate it. Just talk about it to someone.

theres really no good way to avoid that. but i think the best way to calm yourself down is to convince yourself its a movie and its not real [unless its based on a true story...]

good luck
