Why are there more male chefs than female?

Or at least it seems so. When i worked in this resturant, there was only 3 total the whole time i worked there...and it was like 2 years.

You will find more women pastry chef. Because it involves more detail and a lot of exact measurement of ingredients. Which women are generally good at. Men stay more in the kitchen as it involves a lot of heavy work ( butchering, slicing etc.) and rely on the individual taste when adjusting a meal or entree'.

Here's the thing - women cook daily and constantly in the home to provide FUEL for the family. Nothing more than fuel. (Note: who ever heard of oatmeal being served as THE breakfast food?). It is a need thing in the home. We women have to feed everyone to stay alive.

But a restaurant is a "FIESTA" thing. Not FUEL. So the guys have managed to do food as a festival and fun thing. Nothing about FUEL for the body, - (exception: health food restaurants).

Men make a career of cooking, for a woman it is a requirement and for some it is a joy, but not me. At my house, we eat healthy food (I am a weeds/seeds/nuts/yogurt nutcase) everyday, but only at meal times. A chef cooks ALLLL the time.

FIESTA versus FUEL. That's all.

Because women don't like to cook, especially in restaurants where they make a lot more in the front of the house. They are bringing in $500.00 a night in tips while a Chef may make 1/2 that if they are lucky. Sexism has nothing to do with it, it's because they aren't stupid.

can i put it as simple as this. ive worked in a hotel kitchen before deluxe 5 star set up. have you notice how big and heavy the pots are. think about feeding a 100 guest in one event in one night. male are known to be more technical about procedures. step 1, step 2 and were done. and we ladies do it like step 1, step 1.a, step 1.b. (do u see my point?) precise and quick.

in the philippines, gift shop malls who offers free gift wrapping, have male attendants doing the gift wrapping. and i tell you they are really fast like in a 30 secs theyre done.

no bias but we females are known to be more detailed and always adds a personal touch to everything we do. articulate and refine.

There are still careers that are viewed as more gender-appropriate, despite our growth away from this tendency. People still use the word "stewardess" and think of nursing as something female. It's the same kind of situation with chefs. Give it time.

It all goes back to tradition. Some professions are dominated by men. Politics is one of them; professional cooking is another. It was OK for women to cook in the home but discouraged to cook out of the home. But the attitudes are changing and more women are cooking professionally.

Because working in the kitchen is the worst job in a restaurant. "Hostesses" that seat tables at high end restaurants make more than cooks do.

i think of woman cooks are uncommon for this reason unique, esp in restuarants. wager the clarification cld be that male cooks are extra suitable and able to stand and artwork for long hours. Esp while they nd to hold heavy woks, pots and pans. yet nv did i doubt that woman cooks is often very imaginitive while is composed of cooking

I guess men like to cook more than woman. Also the tables are being turned now. Now the men have to cook for us.

I know. I think most guys cook well because it's not in women's genes to cook as good as men. lol. Good question.
