He sucks so hard sometimes that it really hurts :( He is 2 weeks old. I read in a La Leche League book that when the baby does this you should unlatch him/her and say "no biting" with a stern voice. I don't want to scare him, & honestly I don't think at 2 weeks-old he would make the connection. My nipples are so sore! Advice?

He's not biting you, he's not latched properly. You are right that he is way too young to understand a reprimand, and in this case, it wouldn't be appropriate anyway. Make sure he's getting his mouth WAY open before you latch him and that his lips are turned out, not in. You want to have areola as well as nipple in his mouth - if all he's getting is nipple, he'll suck harder to try and get the milk, and won't have much luck. I would seek the help of a lactation consultant if you continue to have trouble.

At 2 weeks old your nipples are still getting toughened up but it should not hurt like that. He is not biting you, he probably just has strong suction. I have heard that some newborn babies can actually suck a blood blister on a parents finger. This is just a problem of latching on. If he is not in the correct position when he latches on it will cause extreme pain. If you have the La Leche League book already, it will walk you through the proper steps for a good latch on and the pain will go away. I can guarantee you that at two weeks old he is not biting you and any attempts to stop him with a stern voice may put an end to breastfeeding. We don't want to scare the little angel. Congrats on breastfeeding!

Don't do it, he's too young. He is still learning, as are you. Can you call the hospital or la leche leauge to get a lactation nurse consult? You may not have a proper latch, and he may be frustrated.

I won't lie to you, you will probably have pain for a few more weeks while you get used to it. But getting a proper latch and establishing a good breastfeeding realtionship is crutial to your success. Get some help to get over this rough patch, in a month or so it will be completely routine!!! Good luck!

He may not be attached correctly, which can cause sore nipples as well as feel like biting. You can get some cream to put on your nipples to help with the soreness, and eventually it will go away.
