That's a very good question. I couldn't find any answers in my research. The stripes must help with visibility of the ball for the players. But I don't why the NFL doesn't sport the stripes.

I've got a friend who is a high school coach. Maybe he knows the answer. I'll try to call him tomorrow and let you know.

College plays more night games than the NFL and the stripes let you see the ball better at night.
