He needed an heir or two & Diana's family had long been associated with the royal family. She was an attractive woman that he thought he could manipulate her into the wife he wanted. He also thought she would put up with his affair with Camilla, which began long before his marriage.
Think back to the engagement interview on TV when he was asked about being in love. He said "Well, whatever that is anyway". She looked devastated & turned bright red. It wasn't exactly what a young woman in love wanted to hear, was it?

I guess he felt pressured by his mother to marry someone who could give him an heir. It is too bad because he was very deceitful and hurt his wife terribly. His decision to marry for all the wrong reasons was absolutely cruel. He was sending gifts to Camilla the day of his wedding to Diana. I felt very bad for Diana. She was beautiful, young and in love with him and couldn't compete with Camilla. I am very happy that Camilla didn't attend the 10 year anniversary celebration for Diana. It would have been totally inappropriate. I lost a great deal of respect for Prince Charles when he treated Diana so badly and I think the Queen is just as guilty. She knew all along and she never had any respect for Diana or Fergie when they were part of the family. Diana did so much for her Country and she made her boys happy and independent. To see them as they are today is wonderful. Diana would be so proud and she had a great deal to do with how they have turned out.

Elizabeth II, his mother wanted him to be married. And she instructed him to find a suitable wife. In the UK, it is sort of a joke for the princess or future Queen to produce an heir & a spare. And so Prince Chuck married Lady Diana Spencer in order to fulfill his obligations to the Queen. In hopes of one day, that she will step down and name him her Regent.
But now with Princess Di's death, the divorce slapped him out of the running. And now he's married to Camilla, I'll be really surprised if Chuck gets to be King.

how do you know if he loved her or not? Did Charles say that to you? Furthermore, if he didn't love her, he won't be the first man on earth to marry a woman and not love her. What bit of difference does it make now anyways! I'm not defending his actions but come on, the woman is dead (has been for a decade) and he is remarried to some old hag. End of story -- Let those boys' mother rest in peace, geez.

Because of outmoded pressure on him to marry a virgin and produce a male heir who was known to be his son. In past centuries, heirs of European kings have disputed the throne and even started civil wars.
In the past, kings and princes have married their queens for breeding stock; they keep the woman (or man) they loved as a mistress.
The whole thing seems stupid now.

He probably thought he was in love with her or wanted to be in love with her, because she was "suitable" and Camilla was not.
However, I honestly believe that he did love her, at least a little, because she was his wife and the mother of his children. But that kind of love wasn't enough for either of them.

Do you know that? Did you ask the same questions when the butcher and his wife parted? Or did you say it was none of your business?
