Okay this is my 3rd question now related to this subject but I really do need help!
So for the people that don't know: I'm going to a water park tomorrow. Last night I started my period. Everyone told me I needed tampons. So I went and got some and I can't get the freaking thing in there. If I do get it in, then I have the hardest time getting it out. No, I'm not putting it straight up, no I'm not tilting it too much, and NO I'm not tilting it the wrong way. I'm slightly tilting the tampon toward my back but it hurts like crazy and when I finally get it in, it will not come out and I have to tug as hard as I can and it hurrrrtttsss..

Well anyways... I don't know what I'm going to do because I'm leaving tomorrow morning for this water park and I can't really wear one of the tampons if I can't put them in and I don't want to wear a pad because it will get wet and turn into a diaper..

I have a black bathing suit and black board shorts... Will I be okay with no protection?

Yes, it is my first time with tampons...
And I'm relaxing as much as I can but it just does NOT go in.
I'm going to be at the park from 11 AM to 6:30 PM and the lines are always extremely long...
They'll probably be even longer because it's the last week the park is open.

It is the SMALLEST size tampon and it's definitely not dry.

2007-09-02 17:17:09 · update #2

I'm using Tampax... the slim fit.
and of course I'm taking the applicator out haha
I have a constant flow... it's sooo annoying... I'll be sitting down trying to get the tampon in and before it's in I get blood on whatever I'm sitting on.

I'm sorry I keep making a lot of additional details but people are asking questions and I'm answering them.

What brand are you trying?

I like playtex, there easier for me to insert....

Have you tried inserting them when you have some flow to lubricate going in

also, you said it hurts when you pull them out...but also said it was not dry...so did you get it in and it hurts to take out?

You have to wear something...a black suit will not work with no protection.

I know this sounds dumb..but you are removing the applicator after you insert the tampon right?

good luck, email me if you need more

Hey there!

I can tell you're stressing over this. Don't. That's why you're having so many problems.
First off, I have kind of the same issue. I'm 31 and after years of trying, still have a hard time with tampons. Getting them in is easy, taking them out is ok, but wearing them? I can feel them inside. It's nto painful usually, but is sometimes uncomfortable. It's probably the way I've put them in, but they still do the job so I don't worry about them that much.

You said you sit on the floor when you put them in. Try standing with a foot on the toilet seat or tub for support. If you are using a tampon with an applicator, which I find is much easier, use a little vaseline on the applicator to make the move smoother. Obviously you know to push it in, then push the applicator in so that it pushes the tampon out of the applicator and inside of you. Gently pull the applicator out. Tug on the string GENTLY to make sure the tampon is inside. You'll probably feel it in you, which is probaby making you feel uncomfortable. Don't worry about it!!

You can leave the tampon in for up to 8 hours. When you're ready to pull it out, stand the same way you did when you put it in (foot on the toilet). Take a deep breath, grab the string, exhale and pull out at once. If it was the correct size for your flow, it should be wet enough that it just slides right out. To discard, just drop in the toilet and flush.

Always wear the smallest tampon for your flow. Anything larger will increase your risk of getting TSS (Toxic Shock Syndrome), it's a rare infection from the tampons.

Since you are going to the waterpark tomorrow, I would suggest wearing a pad until your get to the park, then put the tampon in before you head to the slides. If that's not possible, put it in right before you leave for the park.
I would say you could go without protection since you're wearing a black swimsuit, but you'll run the risk of the blood dripping down your legs if you're standing in line too long, and that would be very embarrasing to you, or even worse, you could sit on your towel and have a blood spot on the towel from leaking through.

Good luck with whatever you choose, and I hope you have fun at the waterpark!!

I had the same problem for years - no matter what I did tampons always hurt like hell - putting them in, having them in, AND taking them out. Have you tried o.b.? They're the *only* ones that are comfortable for me. I'm not sure why, but now I swear by them. It may seem weird to use one without an applicator, but it's actually really easy! Give them a try, and don't feel bad if tampons hurt - you might just have really tight vaginal muscles, or your something could be tilted slightly, making using tampons painful because of the angle. After you get over the water park thing, you could always go to the ob/gyn and see what they recommend.

Yes, the water park should be last on your list of things right now... I can not use one at all, I get TSS. Never heard of the water stopping your period. I would test that out in your bathtub first.

I looked up about it... and found this too... " If you don't succeed after several times, see your health care provider. It may be that you were born with a very small opening in your hymen and you can't insert tampons. This is true in only about 2% of teens, but it could be a problem. "

So, you could be in the 2%. There is telling you how to insert one, and gives you suggestions if you are having problems...

And, if all else fails, ask another "real life" female that you know uses them.

youve basically answered all the advice i was going to give... are you using the smallest absorbancy? are you applying with the right angle? are you relaxing?

but heres the secret: practice makes perfect. it took me like 10 minutes to figure it out the first time i tried them. then it took me like 5 minutes when i had to change it. now, ive got it down to like a minute.

you definately need to relax though. also, try sitting differently when youre putting it in. some women sit on the toilet while doing it, others put one leg up, and others just stand normally with their legs a little bent and apart.

as for the pain when taking them out- it is definately painful if they are not full. the longer you leave it in [obviously this is based on your flow... you dont want to leave it in too long!!!], the more it will absorb and the easier it will come out.

suggestion- i wouldnt go without any protection. just wake up a little earlier tomorrow and keep trying. youll get it eventually, i promise. and make sure you bring some tampons to the water park. youll be there for 7 hours, plus driving time. i would bring at least 5... hey, its better safe than sorry!

Your period doesn't stop when you're in the water. Try using a light absorbency tampon since they're so skinny. Also, if you've just put the tampon in then try to pull it right back out, it's hurting so bad because it's dry and pulling on your skin. Ask your mom for some advice.

Hi Haley Joe- I feel so badly for you, and have answered all ur questions. You will be okay by merely taking pads with you. This is stressing you out so much, I wish I could just give you a hug. The only thing I am going to suggest is that you use some vaseline, in ur vaginal area, and on the tampax itself. If this continues to hurt, just stop it. You need to rest, hon, and enjoy ur day 2morrow. Take care, stop stressing, and eventually this will become something that seems natural. I had a heck of a time trying to get tampons in when I started using them. Use the BLACK- Take some THIN MINI pads, change them after swimming- ur friends will understand. Just have FUN 2morrow, kiddo, okay? Love is sent ur way!

It sounds to me like you're just too nervous about this and as a result your muscles are tightening making it painful. It's too late for tomorrow, but you can buy something called personal lubricant. A little of this might make the tampon slip out easier.

By the way, periods don't stop while you're in the water. Wear a pad and change it immediately when you get out of the water. You'll be fine.

First of all, you WON'T be ok with no protection, trust me. It doesn't matter what color you bathing suit is. Sure, once you get out of the water no one can see it, but it will leak into the water around you and form a cloud of blood. trust me, it happened to me. NOT GOOD! The key to gettign tampons in your first time is just to relax. If it hurts to get it up, then you aren't fully relaxign your muscles down there. Same thign for gettign it back out. Trust me, it takes some practice, but you'll get used of it. Remember...RELAX!!! Use plastic applicators, try tampax pearl. And your period doesn't stop when you go in water. Try twistign ti a bit as you put it in, just eb very gentle.

If your period is really light you might be able to get away with it. but otherwise no.......I haven't succeeded w/ tampons yet either but I do know you have to relax your muscles, just chill. Try playtex sport with PLASTIC applicators. If you can't, no worries, say you have a stomach ache and don't feel up to it. Hope that Helps
