For yourself, I'd say whatever you need in combination with whatever is reasonable. You need to mourn something for the amount of time it takes you to recover. That being said, you don't want healthy crying to turn into something so long that it only causes more depression and prevents you from moving on.
For others, I'd say you need to cry for them as long as it takes you to feel compassion, passion, and sympathy for their situation. Then, you need to continue to cry, but this time with them and also with the intention of helping them get back up.
For the past, I'd say long enough for you to learn from it.
For the future, I'd say long enough for you to be motivated to change it.

what this is a little confusing if you had an example it would be easier, but as a rule of thumb if someone close to you is hurt because of a death or something you probably get back up quickly because you need to be strong for them, but for your self i would say as long as it takes. For the past and the future don't bother crying because you either cried then or you will cry when the time comes so don't waste more time now crying and try to live your happy normal life.

If you are falling down every time you cry, you should consult a doctor. "Help, I'm crying and I can't get up!"
And why would you cry for the future? Do you know something the rest of us don't? Or are you just projecting the negativity of your current circumstances onto the potential possibilities of what could maybe happen if things don't work out the way you might want them to, maybe? And if so, why are you wasting your precious time NOW doing that???
Quit your crying, and live for now!

Every person is different in the way they are emotionally. What may be right for one, will not be for the next. I think they would need to keep in mind that if the crying persisted on a daily basis and doesn't seem to get better, that is too much.
For me, If I even cry, it is a very short time and I am back up.
Most times, I skip the crying and just get back to life.

I say cry until you fall asleep or the tears naturally stop coming. That's what I do when i just can't take it any longer. For myself, others, the past and the future. Why is something bothering you?

For yourself - when you get tired of crying.
For others - when you realize your tears don't make any difference.
For the past - when you realize that the past is gone and not in need of your tears.
For the future - when you realize hope.

A person should not grieve publicly beyond what would be most beneficial to his/her community. Private grief may be as long as is necessary to relieve one's mind of the burden that our culture and our education has placed upon one. I don't think that any grammatical considerations enter into the question of grief. My place of employment offers me 3 paid days to bury by brother, sister, or father. It offers nothing for burying a grandparent.

I would cry as long as it takes to make me feel better then I would get up and make a plan to make myself and that person better.

Cry until you can't cry anymore for everything, that way you can get it out of your system and move forward with your life!
