You could keep it but the right thing to do is call the Law and tell them what you have found that way they can investigate it and if it isn't claimed with in a certain amount of time it is yours free and clear [after taxes] you dont know if this money was marked or stolen with the serial numbers recorded and soon as you try to spend them you might have the Law at your house anyway

Congratulations. Ownership of things buried in the earth passes with ownership of the land.
Unless it's stolen. Might want to look into that, but I will bet that if you do a title search on your property, you will find it was sold by an estate at some point, and that none of the bills are newer than the date of the decedent's demise.

IF you keep it you better pray it isn't COUNTERFEIT or stolen "MARKED" Money registered and taken in some Bank Robbery or Armored Car Robbery. Mere possession of this would get you 20-25 years in a Federal Penitentiary. Depending on what state you reside in you can also be charged with the actual Robbery for having the money that was stolen in your possession. Something you need to consider before you decide......

If there is none of the following with it: name/addresses/identification card..etc then I guess you have the right to keep the box, but if there are the above mentioned ID of the real owner of the box then it tantamount to stealing or qualified theft.

What are the dates on the bills. Are they in consecutive order? I'm just curious. They may have been part of a bank robbery. I think trying to track down the source would be fun. Are you positive they are real?

RIght... What are the dates on the bills? Are the Federal Reserve Notes? Silver Certificates? Gold Certificates? If so they may be worth more than you think.

Turn it into the police. If no one claims it, it is yours. If the money was stolen and can be traced, then you start spending it, you will have some explaining to do and "I found it" just might not cut it.

Report it to the police, and when they tell you that its yours, report it to the IRS. But, keep in mind that money may be the evidence they have been looking for to put a scumbag away.
