Just to get the facts straight - the independence of some American Colonies from Great Britain was declared on July 2, 1776 - not July 4 - in (I believe) Philadelphia (the same city that during the revolutionary war came out to cheer the entry of British troops following the departure of Washington's army).

If you don't know why, then I will say at least one thing to help.

On July 4, 1776, before we were free from the ruling of the British, we declared independence from the British Empire. Think about George Washington at Valley Forge. He is famous. He fought in the war and later was elected as the First President of our Union. The rest you will have to look up yourself. There are lots of stuff on the web. Just type July 4th, or Independence Day to get a complete answer.

That is the day we celebrate the birth of our nation. The date the Declaration of Independence was signed was July 4, 1776. Too bad they don't teach our history anymore in the government schools.

Most countries that began as colonies or monarchies celebrate their moment when they first declared Independence. July 4, Cinco de Mayo, Bastille Day, etc.

We celebrate the 4th of July because we got freedom from England. When the puritans left England, they left for various reasons and the main one was Religious persecution.
