Nothing wrong at all with your Explorer. The normal operating temp for your engine is around 190 degrees. This would be about the middle of your temp guage. So, since your engine is significantly lower than 190 degrees when cold the gauge reads full cold. consider that the range of the guage itself is probably something like C is less than 170 degrees and H is around 210. Your car has an automatic thermostat that keeps the anti-freeze/coolant flowing through the radiator to regulate the engine temp. when the engine gets to about 190 degrees the thermostat will open to allow the antifreeze/coolant in your engine to enter the radiator and thus be cooled by either the fan or the air moving through the radiator due to the forward movement of your explorer. hope this helps...

C indicates a low temperature that won't rise until it does run for a while. A gauge that shows the middle when cold is not proper and that means it needs some attention. Gauges do go bad. The thermostat keeps the temp at a prescribed 175 or 180---that is the temp it normally runs at--any higher or lower is a sign of a problem--you are ok if it stays the same..

They are supposed to be cold until they warm up. If your dads stays in the same place, even when it is turned off, then your dads truck isnt right. That is why they have temperature gauges.

If you have a 93-2004 Explorer, those were the main problem proned Explorers. If you have a 2005-present Explorer, than you should take it into the dealer and find out what's wrong. The 2005's-present seem to be almost problem free.

If it NEVER warms up, replace the thermostat. It's stuck open.
