If you're starting an NBA franchise which player would you be inclined to take.

Both are excellent players, however I would pick Tim Duncan for the following reasons.
1. All things being equal, you always pick the big man. Skilled, talented big men are the rarest commodity in basketball. Just look at the ridiculous contracts that teams hand out to any big man with the least bit of talent. On the other hand, SG/SF are the positions that are most stacked with talent. It would therefore be easier to find talented wing players to complement Duncan than it would be to find competent bigs to support Kobe. The current situation of both players support this argument.

2. Duncan is a proven leader. Some would say that Kobe has never had a team worth leading, and if he gets a decent team he would then prove himself. This may or may not be true, but until he shows that he can do it, his leadership will remain in question. In fact, Kobe has been known to act immaturely and to pout when things don't go his way. I remember a couple of games when he refused to take a shot because he felt that he was being criticized for shooting too much. Duncan on the other hand, while he has the ability to just take over a game, often allows himself to be just a part of the team. By doing this he has allowed teammates like Manu and Tony to achieve their potential. Manu was a wild and often out of control player when he first came in the league, and until this year, Parker was known to disappear in big games. Duncan never criticised them to the press or asked for them to be traded. The results speak for themselves, there really is no better argument than that.

Tim Duncan. The most fundamentally sound athlete to come out of college.

By the way, at the time (During their rookie years at least) Kobe was just a project. Nobody knew his capabilities yet. It would be wrong taking him ahead of an established big man from Wake Forest. Championships are anchored in the shoulders of Big men (With the exeption of Jordan' Bulls of course because they didn't have any great help down the middle) Plus he makes his teammates better. And that is why the Spurs are winning those championships.

I wouldnt say that duncan makes the players around him better because thats usually Manu's and Tony Parker's job and there driving and kickin skills are top notch. Duncan is probably the best back to the basket player in the nba. I wouldnt pick him over Kobe though.

Kobe on the other hand can score, get to the line, or play great defense whenever he wants. He can shoot the three, mid range jumpshot and attack the basket better than almost anyone in the nba(except lebron going to the basket).

So Kobe would be my franchise player, put some have way decent players around him his team would do great. He has too much pressure on his shoulders

Probably Kobe and KG. Kobe has an outside game, which neither Duncan or LBJ possess. LeBron would have a hard time stopping Kobe from raining in 3's.

Tim Duncan all the way. He is an incredible player who makes his team mates better and delivers championships. Robert Horry said that the Spurs were the best team and locker room that he's ever been a part of and that it was all due to Tim Duncan.

Kobe is no no in this case.

I would anytime go for Tim Duncan in this case because capable big men are hard to come by. Tim Duncan is the only versatile big men I can think of at the moment. Versatile as in filling up all the stats.

Duncan will be useless when they play zone defense since he is primarily a back to the basket center/power forward.

Yea he can knock down a 15 footer once in a while but all teams would rather see him take that (which is very shaky) than being in the paint shooting jump hooks. Plus if you make him dribble the ball he goes exclusively to his right hand and doesn't use his left hand...teams can exploit that easily

For Kobe, you can throw anything at him and he'd come out on top....dude is so skilled he doesn't have an "ifs" in his game on both sides of the court. If there is any player in the NBA that demands a triple team about 27 feet from the basket its Kobe Bryant...

I'd start a franchise with Kobe...

I hate all the crap you are giving Kobe...Have you guys even checked into watchign Team USA to see how much of a team player he is? I'd go for Kobe, because he is known for scoring 50 points each month if he has to, he's a lose cannon, where as Timmy will even put up 20, if that...Kobe's lowest points are 20, even with a great time.

Kobe.
