the dependent variable depends on on the independent variable. so like if you said if type faster then i will get done sooner. the dependent variable is time you will get done and the independent is the rate of typing. because the time you get done depends on how fast you type.

These mean pretty much the same thing in every science. The independent variable is what the experimenter is able to change/manipulate. If the experimenter intentionally changes it at the start of the experiment, that's your independent variable (IV). The dependent variable is what the experimenter is looking for. This is changed BY the IV and is measured at the end of an experiment. I'm a psychologist, not a biologist, so we don't usually use the term control variable. But what is universal is that anything that is NOT the IV or DV must be controlled as much as possible (and in this context "control" means kept the same). So a control variable is anything NOT the IV that you want to keep as similar as possible while your experiment is run. The reason you want to do this is that in a pure experiment where ONLY the IV changes, you can certainly know any changes in DV occurred due to the IV change (which you, clever experimenter, changed yourself). But if you had UNcontrolled variables, then how do you know changes in the DV weren't due to those variables, not your perfectly manipulated IV? Your time is wasted, or more research must be done, because that possibility exists.

dependent variable (n.):
1: (statistics) a variable in a logical or mathematical expression whose value depends in the independent variable; if f(x)=y, y is the dependent variable

independent variable is one that doesn't depend on anything

the two different variables are represented on a graph. the independent variable is the x-axis (the horizontal line on a graph) and the dependent variable is the y-axis (the vertical line on a graph). the dependent variable is something you can control, whereas you can't control the independent. for example, the clothes you wear depends on the weather (that makes your outfit the dependent, and the weather the independent.) hope this helps. good luck!

From my bio lab book: "The dependent variable represents the response to the factor that changes. The independent variable is the factor that changes."

or in simpler terms, the d.v. is the factor being measured and the i.v. is the factor being changed.

For example, if your hypothesis is the grass will grow faster if I use more fertilizer the grass growth is the dependent variable and the amount of fertilizer used is the independent variable.

independent variable is the factor u change dependent variable is depends on the independent variable for example if u r testing to see if feeding chickens a special feed will make them lay more eggs the independent variable is the feed and the dependent variable is the number of eggs layed. the number of eggs depends on the feed
