I'm sharing a rather nice multi-bedroom dorm with a common area and a kitchen and communal bathroom. The thing is, my bedroom doesn't have a lock on the door. I don't want to drill a hole in the door or anything, but is there a way to install a lock on it that's easy to take off afterwards? And doesn't cost the moon, if possible?

PS: I can't see any screw on the knobs itself, but on the little latch mechanism on the side has. Is that how I take it out?

PPS: My roommate is peering over my shoulder and asking why I need a lock. He is eating one of my bags of chips as he asks this, which he grabbed from my room, I point out. (he's not a thief, but he is a mooch)

William B. has given you the best answer. (for some reason the others are suggesting you do what you've already said you don't want to do!!!)
An exterior lock set will run $8.00 - $20.00, requires no modification to the door, installs in about ten minutes with a phillips screwdriver, and you can take it with you when you move!
GOOD LUCK :)

You can purchase a entry lock set for about 10.00 bucks. Then on the side of the door knob where you noticed the little latch mechanism push this in with a screw driver and pull the knob off. Now you can remove the cover plate and and unscrew the 2 screws holding the door set in place. Remove knob stem from door. Now go to door edge and remove the 2 screws and remove the catch. Now install your lock set according to the instructions and lock your door.

I have to agree with some of the other people. Just go buy a locking door knob and replace the one you have on the door. Don't loose the old one so that you can put it back when you move out. But this way you can lock the door without damaging the door. Oh and sorry about the luck.

There are quite a few cheap easy ways to lock a door from inside but not much you can do if you want to lock the door and leave that can be installed without door modifications. The only option I can think of would be to replace the existing latch set with a lockable one. If that is not possible, I am afraid you are out of luck.

I have the exact same setup, and it can drive you mad if you think about it too much. The first week I was scared to leave, in case Roomie stole my computer or something.
But do you really want to lock all your food and possessions in a very tiny room? (At least, our dorms aren't very big, and then you also won't have milk or refrigerator food.)
You should just have a talk with him, explain that he's not allowed to touch your things and eat your food. If he won't listen, threaten to sick the RA on him. And if it gets really drastic, you could get Security or Cops involved, but hopefully it won't come to that. (Or if you can find a lock, go for that. I would, but it's against our Rez's rules.)

based on the area like one component i could want perpetually, or one component i could take to a wasteland island.. perpetually could be to be surrounded by using love/human beings. i could circulate definitely insane in any different case, spending the evening in my mattress room i circulate loopy. If it became into to take to a wasteland island it can be a form of image voltaic powered cd participant or something so as that i could desire to take heed to track to maintain myself entertained.

Go and purchase and exterior door lock that is just in the handle. Not the dead bolt.
