I have a 1998 Craftman self propelled lawnmower with a 6.75 H.P. Eager-1 Tecumseh engine. Everytime I start it, it runs perfect for about 1 second and then it quits running like someone hitting the kill switch. When I actually do get it started it reves back and forth. You can actually see the govenor pivoting back and forth. What would cause this and how would one fix this problem?

I agree with William. Could very well be your primer bulb has a crack in it. Do you see a lot of air bubbles in there when it's trying to run?

Also check your fuel filter. If it's clogged, it won't be able to sustain good fuel flow and will run erratically, if it runs at all.

The carburetor needs to be cleaned and a rebuild kit installed. Take it off, take it apart and soak it in a good parts/carb cleaner, not the spray stuff. Check all the passages and put it back together with a rebuild kit. Make sure the fuel tank is clean too.

Sounds like fuel starvation. Check the fuel line and the fittings it connects to for obstructions. Check the fuel filter if it has one. Make sure the fuel tank is free of debris. If all that checks out you may need to clean or replace the carburetor.

Definitly sounds like a carb/fuel issue - if it has an adjustable fuel metering screw ( bottom of float bowl) id adjust it in a bit and see if that helps- if it doesnt have one- well sounds like a carb cleaning is in order - meaning a total disassembly and thourough cleaning.
