"I'm not talking about a god or gods. I'm just talking about fate or karma"
These are not two things, but one. Karma is another way to talk about sin only in a different religion.
If you are seeking a rational education, begin with the simple facts. There is such that causes things and such that are effects of a cause. Read a few of Plato's early dialogues and see if you are not delighted by what you can know and find out about. Think.

I'm not sure. I think some people are dealt terrible hands such as a death of a child. I couldn't imagine that. So in this instance, no I don't think MAJOR things happen for a particular reason but by the hand life deals us.
On the other hand, I think our choices contribute to our fate and what we choose will either benefit us or in some cases, bite us in the butt.
The difference in the 2 is we have a choice in the latter.

Of course there's a reason, just not the ones that go like "Well, if you'd prayed harder..." or "If you had been more respectful...". The reasons are usually very mundane. Good things happen to bad people all the time, and bad things happen to good people all the time. Just being in the right place at the right time sometimes makes you fortunate. Being in the wrong place at the right or wrong time could be very UNfortunate. Hard work and intelligence usually pays off, laziness and stupidity generally doesn't, but there are exceptions, of course, in every place and every time.

it depends on what reason youre looking for. i believe that most things have a purpose of happening, which is why they happened in the first place. think about it. generally, when something major happens it usually triggers a response in you. perhaps that response is the purpose of the event happening. like a spur for you to do something about what has happened or what could happen.
i believe that there is such a thing as fate. usually, the people you meet in your life has impacted you in some way or another whether you are aware of it or not. that, is the purpose of them entering your life, and the purpose of you entering theirs.
in the case of cause and effect, an event must preside the present one in order for it to exist. thus it is so that there must be something out that that influences how the present event has turned out.

I really do believe that most MAJOR things in our lives happen for a reason. I'm talking about things like missing a particular day of school/work when something goes wrong that day or happening to meet a particular person at random. I guess maybe those aren't really major things, but they're the type of things where a coulple years later you might go "oh, I'm glad that happened because now......" or whatever. I don't know, I'd like to believe that things happen for a reason and that they're not just coincidences. But who really knows.

no life is a series of coincidences. most things are out of our control. we can only choose our actions. it is right many people believe everything happens for a reason. this is an illusion. consider a example. suppose one have an accident and broke a leg he goes to the hospital meet a wonderful girl fall in love marry him. now many people will believe your accident happend for a reason. but you think so only because you donot know what could have happened had you not broken your leg. you could have not gone to the hospital and insted gone to your office and could have been promoted and even met a better girl and fallen in love.... so i think onbe thinks of everything happens for a reason because one dosent consider the alternatives. besides its emotionally painful as is clear from the example.

There are influences.
Choice has major implications...
What if you were misled into making a choice.... Would that not be influence?
You might trigger a chain reaction of events because of one choice..
This is the way demons work. They might be a group of them working to make you believe certain truths that could ultimately force you to believe and make choices you would not normally make.
Trust yourself always.

All things happen for a cause-and-effect type reason. The only "deep and meaningful" reason for things are the reasons we assign to them.
