I've been a directv user for over 10 years, and one of the responders is wrong when he/she stated that on cloudy days it goes out, the only time that happens is when there is a very heavy storm approaching and it hasn't started raining yet, once it starts raining signal clears up.
Of course the problem we have around here with our cable company, who isn't Comcast, but when we have a storm like that, or rain even, you can expect your cable to be out for days.
I wouldn't get it for internet, but for television there is nothing better.
Check directv's website for channel listings, and prices on their packages, I've linked their site, you'll find every channel comcast has and then some, the only ones they won't have are going to be your local cable access channels.
In fact right now if you order their NFL Sunday Ticket, you'll get all the channels they have to offer for free for four months, (NFL Sunday Ticket is of course pricey at, $69.99 for those four months).
Not to mention they'll be launching close to 100 HD channels before too long. They'll also be launching their on demand services very soon, as they're already testing some of those.
Let me know if you want a $50 referral as well, if I refer you and you sign up, you get $50 and I get $50. (probably taken off billing)

I've had both. Here's the difference:
Customer Service:
DirectTV - great. Easy to get someone on the phone.
Comcast - terrible. Long wait times.
Signal Quality:
About the same, except during heavy weather when the satellite signal is lost.
Program Selection:
The same - for basic network television.
Other features:
Comcast is bidirectional, whereas DirectTV is only on-way. In other words, you can request movies on demand and get them instantly with Comcast. With DirectTV, you have to wait for the movie to play at a certain time. Also, with the Comcast cable service you can also get high speed internet, and phone service as well. Direct TV doesn't offer those things.

Honestly, I've had Directv, Dish and a few cable companies including Comcast. If you're into sports and are willing to pay Directv would be the best choice. The sports packages are well worth it. I have cable for all my tv's but have directv for the sport packages on 1 tv. As far as all around service and programming goes, they are all very similar. Although cable does give you very local local channels. Directv uses large metropolitan areas. If you have local news stations and you live in a small city or metro area you won't get that. Aside from that the bill is generally the same if you get comparable programming. The only other thing would be if you had several tv's hooked up and were on a basic cable package. There is no charge for those extra tv's. On satellite you have to pay around $5 for each extra receiver, unless you want to watch the same channel on each one. I used my L/R sat rec. and hooked my B/R tv up to it with a remote extender and it worked great. So if you're not into sports and you switch I don't you'll see any significant difference. Like I said I have both and they are both great but if you have one or the other I wouldn't go through the hassle of switching unless there was a big problem with your provider. BTW Directv has all the major and most of the minor cable tv networks with several sub channels as well like the Disc science channel and so on.

Have DirectTv now, can't wait to go back to Comcast. On a cloudy day, slight rain day, heavy rain day doesn't matter Direct goes OUT. And yes Comcast is bad customer service, but at least I get to watch TV.

Comcast is like "the man" it watches and limits your bandwidth even when he says he won't. And the prices are stupid high because they have a few area based monopolies, which leaves some with no other choice. DTV is alright but only go basic or you'll incur a five dollar tack on for any additional service like Tivo or other recievers. And the signal may go on the fritz in a sstrong storm. Still better though.

Just a couple of other notes. You sat does NOT go out on cloudy days. As the poster stated above it has to be raining pretty darn hard to totally lose your signal, and I mean HARD, like buckets where you can't even see.
Also, they do carry all the channels you describe above, and will have them all in HD at the end of the month when the 100 HD channels go online.
Also, Comcast customer service in my opinion is HORRIBLE. I have sat on the phone for hours due to internet outages which is why I switched. And for the record, one posters is inaccurate when stating that you can'y get internet with DTV. They use several companies like Earthlink and Bellsouth DSL to allow you to bundle your TV, phone and internet.

I've always been tempted to change to satellite TV, but I hear that on cloudy days it won't work and the internet speed isn't that good.
Does anyone know for sure?
