Actually, 1st answer was pretty good - but doesn't beat Job in the bible. Don't read the whole book, if you don't want to - just the first couple of chapters. Basically
1) All of his kids die (while celebrating his birthday, I believe)
2) Then, all of his belongings and property are stolen or destroyed
3) Then, he contracts a painful disease whose most evident symptom is boils, which he sits and scrapes with a potsherd.
4) His wife, fed up at his inability to support her and his abysmal state in general, tells him to curse God and die.
5) Finally, his 3 best friends get together and cheer him up by asking him what great evil he committed that would cause God to curse him so thoroughly.
Oh - and this started out with him offering a sacrifice to God for his children's sins while God bragged about what a faithful guy he was.
Job beats any story *I* ever heard.

The only real tragedy is unrepented sin.
God controls our lives and guides and blesses us, but He gives us our free agency. We may live our lives in accordance with His plan for us or we may foolishly shorten or terminate our lives.
I am confident that there is a time to die, but I believe also that many people die before their time because they are careless, abuse their bodies, take unnecessary chances, or expose themselves to hazards, accidents, and sickness.
The Lord does not always heal the sick. He does not always relieve suffering and distress. These may be part of a purposeful plan. Suffering can make saints of people as they learn patience, long suffering, and self-mastery.
The gospel teaches us there is no tragedy in death, but only in sin.

I'm not going to try to name a specific tragedy - but the best sort of kind as far as worst kind goes (assuming you're talking about writing here) would be extremely bad things happening to really good people who don't deserve the tragedies.

OK, going to work, having a horrid day and getting fired, car dies on the way home, you walk to your tiny one bedroom apartment and sit on the sofa only to have it cave in, get up and go to the landlords to complain about the rat hole your living in when the elevator cord breaks and you plunge to your imminent death.

if you need a gun you're paranoid. If you own a gun you're a danger to the rest of us. Else, you're a criminal.
