We are tinkering with the idea of breaking up our one month during the summer into two seperate time frames, but I was wondering if my step son's mother would still get her one weekend like she does when we keep him for a whole month.

Make a new "parenting plan" either formal(court) or just typed up so there are no more misunderstandings. If you don't have a parenting plan in place already you should.
Me and my ex just can do it over the phone because we aren't fighting over the kids.

well weather she does or not. would it matter so much if she wanted the child that week end and you just let her have the child.. assuming that the child wanted to go be with her of course... it is only one week end
