The "sexual" part of it does not matter. It is the difference between assault & battery that matters:
Assault - an act with the purpose or substantial certainty of causing a person the immediate apprehension of bodily harm to himself or his family.
For an assault you don't have to do anything but cause the person an "immediate apprehension". For a battery, contact is necessary. You don't have to contact the person himself! You can make contact with something intimately associated with the person, such as their handbag, wallet, briefcase, etc. (Contact w/ their automobile is debatable....)

It may just be a terminology thing. Or, it could also be the difference of a threat (assault) or the actual committed act (battery); some states use assault and battery in this way.
In the state I live in, the law defines it as criminal sexual conduct and then a degree is assigned (i.e. Criminal Sexual Conduct - 2nd Degree).

depends on the state you live in some call it sexual assault, others battery, others assault and battery-depending on severity of crime-assault is 1,2,3 degrees-assault is highest, battery lower degree again the states make up what constitutes assault and what is battery or if they use battery with assault--this is a legislative act to regulate the laws for a state-
