I'm looking around for a video card to play oblivion and the upcoming dx10 games. The EVGA nvidia geforce 8600 GTS and the 8800 GTS caught my eye. However, I was wondering if I should wait until some better cards come out. Also, when would that be?

Specifically, should I wait for new releases from nvidia or ati, or just go with the cards on the market now since they definitely are pretty new.

New cards are coming out in December. Expect them to be pricey. More discounts are possible on 8600 and 8800 series by that time.

Both of those cars would be a good choice. The next generation cards coming out will probably cost a lot. I personally would pick the 8800GTS 320mb because you get a lot of gaming power and the price is not too high. I'm not sure what your budget is or how desperately you need the card. So you might have the ability to wait and get an expensive card that will be awesome. But I don't know when the new cards a going to come out.

It depends on how much you're willing to spend when making the decision. If you want to be able to play games that use dx10 then getting an 8800 GTS would be ideal.

8800 GTS is pretty much the best, surpassed only by the insane and insanely expensive 8800 Ultra.

just by looking around and doing internet window shopping on newegg, the best reviewed video cards, i thought were the xfx 256 cards. they seemed to be comparable with 512 cards.
