YES, but expect it to be slower than the internal drive.

Yes but:

1) The drive needs to be plugged up and powered on before you power up the machine.

and

2) You have to go into the BIOS and change the boot sequence to tell it to boot from the USB drive (which won't show up unless you do step #1)

As far as having your own PERSONAL C: drive, you could do it, but switching back and forth would be no easy task.

You could create your own Windows "user" account, that would lock YOUR settings and no one could change them.

But that wouldn't keep your kids from downloading things and using up valuable hard drive space.

You don't have to use it as your C:. Thats where all the windows systems files are. You can use it as another drive, it might show up as F: or a higher letter in the alphabet. Just plug it in your usb port and store the extra files on it. Buy one with 80GB or more even though most of them are 100GB or more. You can install applications to an external hard drive by selecting the drive letter when you install a program

well first you would need to somehow install windows on the external hard drive. once you do that, you have to get the BIOS to boot from the external hard drive, once that's over, you can install your applications and transfer your files to the external hard drive
