I will be visiting Mexico (Guanajuato) and staying with the family of a friend. They plan to take me dancing, so I need to know what to expect. I will not be going to nightclubs catering to tourists but, rather, to clubs frequented by locals.

You can guarantee Shakira will be playing. She is HUGE in Mexico! As well as doing about 18 sell-out dates in Mexico during her recent Oral Fixation tour, she did a free concert that attracted 230,000 people. So, considering that, you may want to familiarise yourself with her music. Fijacion Oral is her most recent Spanish album and features the massive Reggaton hit 'La Tortura'!

Have a great trip!

Well as i live in Gto, i have to tell you that there are many places in here, and some play different music, you can go and dance just electronic & disco music, also there are Salsa clubs, Ranchera ( i'd suggest the "tamboradas" ranger music and good beer, hats and boots ), you can also get to a ska club or something like that there are many places, feel free to send me a message if you want to know anything about Guanajuato after all i live here =P.

There is no such thing as "Mexican Music" just like there is salsa and merengue there is tejano, rancho and mariachi.. For you to say that its all "annoying" is not racist its being ignorant.. Think of all the genre's that there are in the world.. And yes I am mexican but I'm married to someone who is Puerto Rican and I have "white" ppl in my family along with everything else.. Ppl adapt to their environments and if your not used to listening to it then you wont understand it.. Seeing that its all in Spanish all you really hear is the accordians or w.e. you dont listen to/understand the words and after all isnt that why ppl listen to the music that they do.. Because of the message or lyrics of a song?

euro music, some techno, mexican pop that's mixed for dance...such as belanova. basically it's just like what we do with the pop music here, funk it up for dancing, it's just in spanish :)

wow, i didn't realize guanajuato was even big enough to have a dance club...although they must because one kept me up everynight...i just thought it was someone's radio :)

the mexican hat dance is still popular. the music is varied and different. kind of a pop-latino-flamenco fusion-infused jazz-mambo-metal feel to it.
