Personally, I don't think that there is a single "best" philosopher so to speak, although if there was one, it'd probably be Plato for the reasons that Sowcratees noted.

I also really enjoy Kant, Kierkegaard and Sartre; - as my name might imply, I'm more of an existentialist rather than a (platonic) realist. I'm a firm believer in the idea that human beings create the meaning of their own lives.

I'm so glad you said Lao-Tzu Animal! I would have to say it be a tie between
Plato and Lao-Tzu

Both come from very different schools of thought, yet both are so very profound and brilliant. Though I do have to raise the question, Lao-Tzu was most likely not a real single person. Rather the Tao Te Ching was most likely a pool of writings by many different writers that were brought together.

So really I'd have to say Plato, for the simple fact Lao-Tzu probably wasn't an actual man, and I couldn't pick Socrates becuase all of his brilliance can be attributed to Plato's writing.

I know you won't pick my answer because I will tell you the truth. It is Plato, not Pluto. Socrates did not write a word, so you have never read anything he wrote or said. From these two facts I deduce that your opinion on Lao Tzu is, at least, questionable. A true philosopher could read this and thank the person who wrote it.

Do you mean how does one exchange right into a expert certainty seeker? the respond approximately getting the PhD, solutions that. The etymology given by using yet another answerer is likewise precise. thinking heavily approximately philosophical matters: what does it mean to "understand" something, what's precise and incorrect all approximately, what's reason and how does one reason nicely -- stuff like that. Doing philosophy capacity thinking approximately such questions. Doing it nicely is something else entirely. Or are you asking why human beings do philosophy? We addicts in basic terms can no longer help ourselves. For the philosophical suggestions, philosophy is relaxing.

No such thing as a best philosopher...They are all so different from one another and have all contributed different perspectives on all of the common questions that mankind have asked throughout history. My personal favourite, though, would be a toss up between Aristotle or Nietzsche, each for completely different reasons.

This sounds very much like a darwin-ian question; i mean,

who has heard of john doe; or kurt Godel or karl Popper?

Possibly because they were not mentioned in the popular

books of our time; Never mind; ive never heard of Lao Tzu

either.(nor "plUto").

In terms of the philosopher's ideas, I can't think of anyone whose ideas I think are consistently great. The philosopher whose works are the most entertaining to read is Foucault.
