The original is by Jose Fernandez Diaz (A.K.A Joseíto). However, the common version we hear today are the based on the lyrics by Jose Marti. A lot of artists have covered the song, including Wyclef Jean.

I think it's an indigenous Cuban song about people who lived in the Guantanamo Bay area. I don' t know who popularized it.
