Not to sound cold here but the child actually is safer at the school than tied up in traffic caused by all the parents rushing to get their children at school. I know that sounds cruel, but I think the child and you would be much safer if staying put. You wouldn't rush out into a tornado to reach the school where most likely they are in the shelter all safe. Your child needs you to be okay.

Well, they'd play hell keeping me from getting one of mine.
We had a couple of bomb threats here a few years back and I went and got my kid, even though they tried to assure me that she was safe and nothing would happen to her.
