Good question: 93% of the general population are tone deaf, meaning they can't tell a middle C from a middle D,musically speaking.......When you're in a group, singing sounds more like a dirge than a tune......We just "think" we sound good......if you were to step away from the group, you would know that if sounds like a herd of cows mooing......

if you've ever seen Matilda I think this quote explains it perfectly when Matilda is trying to show Ms. Honey how she can break the glass with her mental powers
Matilda: (after failing to break the glass) I swear I could do it Miss Honey
Ms Honey: The funny thing about life is that sometimes you can do something a million times and when it counts, your suddenly unable to. Thats the difference between those who win and those who should win: pressure

I think because we are alone, and nobody is around to make us scared inside when we are singing. But when someone is around us while were singing we tend to clamp up or doubt if we have any singing ability at all.

Anxiety causes our vocal cords to constrict, our diaphragms to get tense, and our throats to get tense. Beautiful singing is a relaxed full sound supported by a strong well controlled diaphragm.

It's probably because the singer is biased but the audience is not!
