5-6 used to be considered the standard time for dinner, but I think that has a lot to do with the fact that work days were a little shorter and people also slept earlier (normally you should eat at least 3 hrs before sleeping) and got an earlier start. I think jobs hours are a little less similar these days, and people start and end work at varying times, so the standard has changed a bit. Restaurants may start dinner around 5, but they also serve it as late as 9 usually. You'll notice that when people are expected to stay up later, such as weekends, restaurants are open even longer. My family tends to eat extremely late (think 9-10 at night or even later) because that's when everyone is home. 7pm sounds about right to me as an average, especially if you work until 5-5:30.

i am single with no kids.. so, i eat pretty much when go pick it up!
but, there are many times i will cook too. I would say about 5 or 5:30 I will start getting hungry
