I used bleach and water, washed down the whole floor. I moved everything away from walls and bleached there too. We have a furnace in the garage and I've noticed in one corner there is a hole where possibley mice or chipmunks may have burrowed, which would be between the walls. I have literally sniffed in everything, as usually the smell will get stronger when you're nearer to the problem. Then I wonder if an animal has somehow gotten into the furnace and died. (We are in Michigan and it is just the beginning of September, so we haven't used all summer). Help, I don't know what to do next. I don't want to "mask" the odor, I want to get rid of what's causing it. Thanx

Omg I had the same promlem this spring. I'm sure mine was due to a dead chipmunk since they are always going in and out of my garage. Naughty little critters, lol. One had gotten between the walls and apparently croaked and the smell was awful as you already know. Only thing that helped was to keep the garage open through out the day so it could air out. My neighbor told me to place moth balls around and inside the garage to deter them from wanting to nest in there in the future. So far this has worked, even though I hate the mothball scent it is much better than the other. Btw I'm a Michigander too. Good luck.

You have a dead critter somewhere in the garage. If you can't find it, there is hope...once the carcass is completely decomposed, it will no longer smell.

If you suspect it is in the furnace, I would fire up the furnace to hasten the process.

sounds like something has gotten in to your furnace and died, or in the wall, remove the filter panel and use a flash light to look around,
