If you read and study about the Titanic disaster, its participants and survivors, you may soon come to the realization that their stories are more dramatic, more romantic, more fascinating and more moving than the made-up story of Jack and Rose.
Last year I was privileged to visit one of the exhibitions of actual artifacts that had been brought up from the real Titanic's wreck; everything from preserved letters, clothing, cosmetic jars, dishware from the luxury dining salon, ship's fittings, coal from her engine rooms, statuary, to a massive piece of the ship's outer hull, which were displayed with photos of the crew and passengers, re-creations of the circular stairway to the Grand Salon, the garden restaurant, the staterooms and corridors. It brought home to me and my family more than any movie could the scope and at the same time the intimacy of that fatal night in the North Atlantic.
I think Titanic is a fine movie, and that the story of Jack and Rose provides a focus for the story, but the real thing is the real, true, gripping and memorable story.

That fictional affair wasn't put in there just to make the story interesting. It was a conglomerate of many relationships on the Titanic. It's important to understand the human cost of such tragedies. There were true stories no doubt that were just as inspiring and heartbreaking on the Titanic that we don't know about. The fictional characters of Jack and Rose represented them. So in a way, it's more true than you give it credit for.

I don't think there's anything wrong with the fictional storyline. I study the Titanic and absolutely adore the real thing, yet I love the movie and the characters.
There are many, many true stories that are every bit as interesting - or more so, since they're real. Read about it and you'll come across so many that it makes you want to cry.

I'm not really too bummed about that. It is a cute story with them, but yet, I think the story would be a lot more sad if their story was true. The director was trying to get his point across that thousands of people died on that night, and many people lost the ones they loved. He tries to connect you with the characters and then put you in their situation as they are torn apart and lost. It's a great movie though, I love it!

Perhaps there was a "Jack & Rose" on the Titanic and nobody knows about them. It was a big ship with a lot of people. We'll never know the stories of everybody.

No, not at all. The story was intended to be a fictitious love story placed in a real historic setting. Titanic was fine as it was.

who knows it could have been real, couldnt it. there was more than likely a jack and a rose on the ship. i thought it would be better if they found real people's names that were on the ship, and used that. it would have been better

Hollywood needed to make it dramatic, so a story line was added in, along with the Titanic story.
Its a documentary with story added in to make people watch it!

It would have been neat if that love story was real but you never know, there probably was something similar going on with everyone on board.
