-Elfen Lied (two girl harem, sad, also psychological)- Widely reguarded as one of the greatest series ever- it is probably a must see for a true anime fan. http://myanimelist.net/anime.php?id=226

-Kanon (true harem, sad)- My favorite harem ever. Very emotional throughout its entirety. Some truely heartwrenching moments. http://myanimelist.net/anime.php?id=1530

-Seto no Hanayome (semi-harem, comedy, ecchi). The best romance/comedy currently airing. A boy's world gets turned upside down when he ends up engaged to a mermaid and daughter of the yakuza. http://myanimelist.net/anime.php?id=2104

-Shuffle (true harem, sad). Not sad all the way through like Kanon, but it does have it's one moment in plot. Second best harem ever. http://myanimelist.net/anime.php?id=79

-Maburaho (ECCHI!, true harem, comedy). Pretty funny, and has a lot of fanservice. I probably would have loved this series if I weren't so annoyed by the pink haired chick (Yuna). If you don't mind her though, you will probably enjoy it greatly. http://myanimelist.net/anime.php?id=193

-Girls Bravo (semi-harem, ecchi, comedy). I liked the characters in this a lot more than in Maburaho, but I liked Maburaho's story better. http://myanimelist.net/anime.php?id=241

Sola- (semi-harem, sad). A short series, but a very indepth and involved story line. This also has a pretty decent action/mystery element as well that you don't get from many other romance stories. http://myanimelist.net/anime.php?id=1965

Hope this hepls a little

Rumbling Hearts is the best/saddest I've seen. The main characters girlfriend gets hit by a car while he is on his way to meet her on their anniversary, and she lapses into a coma. Three years later he's hooked up with his best friend, who helped him out of a year long depression. then the girl wakes from the coma but thinks no time has passed and that there all still in highschool. it is one of the best romance anime i have ever watched, and ive been watching anime for the past 15 years (p.s. this is a horrible synapses of it, but ill provide a link to the actual description)

I would definitely recommend Clannad and Clannad;Afterstory. You're sure to cry, but it also has many funny moments. It's a very romantic anime, but not the cheesy romance. It's more of a funny cute romance.

I would recommend Saikano hands down.
