Russians are sort of indifferent towards Americans. As long as you stay in public places, you'll be fine (you know, don't go into dark alleys, that sort of stuff). Avoid drunk people, because, like in any other country, they tend to be unreasonable. If a gypsy comes up to you and says that your whole family is cursed if you don't pay her, just walk away (this is pretty obvious, but you won't believe how gullible some people are). Don't take rides from strangers. You won't have any trouble with racists, since you're white. So overall, I think you should be alright.

If you go to big cities like Moscow or Saint Petersburg, believe me, nobody will pay attention to you. People are used to tourists from all over the world. People's attitude towards you would be the same as if you go to Paris, London or New York.
If you want to see real not touristic Russia I'd suggest you to visit some smaller cities. There you might get some extra attention, but I'm sure it will be positive kind of attention.
It is safe to go clubbing. And clubbing is nice no mater where you party. I mean it doesn't matter if you party in a big city or a smaller one. It will be the same glamourus style.
While it is quite safe in Russia don't forget some basic safety rules that you mind in your own country. Be sure you take a taxi cab back to your hotel after party. Walking at night might become not the most pleasant experience in your life.

ha ha California roxstar, nice try but most Russians would never want to set foot in the USA.
The clubs in Moscow are on par with Vegas or LA. You have to dress well and look good to get in. The guys will only be interested in you if you are easy, sorry to say. there are an incredible amount of good looking women in the clubs so you should be okay with that as some are not.
Clubbing in smaller cities is just as fun and they are much cleaner and nicer than most American venues.
I assume you have friends there already who will show you around. You will have a very good time! don't worry about getting into cars with strangers if you are with your friends. that's completely normal and safe.

Look, it all depends on their character. Every body is different. But you should do some research. Check the place out. See what clubs are good to go to. See what areas are safe. Because Russia is a big place. So there are many different types of people there.
Well, I hope you consider what I have said.

I think it is safe if you go to one of the capital cities. That is safe if you go do normal things like sight seeing , shopping. From what I hear clubbing there is NOT safe, especially for tourists. There is a lot of crime at Russian clubs. There are a lot people out to get tourists' money. If you look at the Russians who go there, it won't be typical Russians either, it will be rich spoiled kids.
I'd recommend going to restaurants that have a bar instead. That is likely to be where local people of various ages might go.

Russians like Russians. They will never tell you directly that they do not like Americans or any other nationality. But in their kitchen they always criticize the Americans and their government. Generally speaking you will learn that the discriminate a lot nationalities. As they consider that they are the best, while the others are uneducated and not worth of anything. Though I believe that if you just talk to one person or a family they will be nice to you.

Now u already have quite practical tips in ur bag ... but wanted to add just this bit : don't be alarmed in a way that wud make u fel particularly threatened now that u are an american ! just follow the simple safety rules as u wud in ur own country ... try n get grasp of a few friendly words in RUSSIAN language , flash ur smile alot and u shud be perfectly fine ! its this false sense of TOTAL and ABSOLUTE insecurity that is gaping out americans from rest of the world !
NOW hatred towards AMERICA is ACTUALLY hatred towards AMERICAN POLICIES which is usually mistranslated into fears u've projected here ...! :)
just go over there, open urself up to RUSSIA and see how it treats u ... like a lover , with its amazing VODKA ;)

I have been twice and had no problems. To be honest no one seem to give a second thought about me being American. I will give you one piece of advice. I would definitely hire a translator and guide.
That way you will have someone with you that has local knowledge of the city and while English is spoken by a lot of people you will still find many older people do not speak English.

Russian men prefer more "traditional" wives and view American women as fat, spoiled, rich bitches who have poor family values. Most Russian men want a Russian woman. I think some Russians are somewhat jealous of Americans being rich and having it easier. They don't hate Americans but they have a different mind set.
It's safe. Have fun!
