My mother in law is (very) recently widowed. A gentleman (that she is not close friends with) asked her out to a play and she accepted. She believes that because she offered to pay her own way, he will understand this is not a date. Is this true? Or do you think this is date? PLEASE, only serious answers. No need to be sexually graphic. Thank you

Not at all it is still a date she just wants her independence. It is fine. There is no problem.
