A cup holder, as the name implies, is a device to hold a cup or other drinking container including an aluminum can. It is a fixture in e.g. an automobile, a train, or a movie theatre. It is also an insulative sleeve used by people to hold a paper or plastic cup of hot beverages. Over its brief history, the cup holder as found in European and Japanese cars has evolved from a token fixture intended to persuade Americans to buy the car (US sales of the Jaguar XJ once suffered for the car's want of one) to a device of such cunning and complexity that it can embody more engineering and design expertise than once went into a whole vehicle. And yet the only thing that will fit safely into a cup holder is a cardboard cup from a coffee-shop chain.the history continues;

Not sure about the first cup holder. The first beer can holder ever molded into a fiberglass sailboat was about 25 years ago on the Santa Cruz 50. Bill Lee, the designer/builder got tired of beer cans rolling around the cockpit every time the boat tacked.
