My Dad says that since clam shells are very fragile I would have to buy some special stuff to strengthen the shell. Anyone know what this stuff is called or where I could buy it?

Well, I think I would have to coat them with something because the back of the clamshell breakes VERY easily.

Some shells break easily, others do not.
If you can use the ones that do not break as much.
If you want to use the ones you have, try to coat them with clear nail polish, or a varnish that you can get at a craft store.
Try on a damaged one first, as I do not know how much the colour will change and how strong it will be after varnishing.

If you do not have nail polish and do not want to spend much money, try to add a thin layer of glue.
The white kind that dries clear, (I think you know it as Elmer's or as wood glue.) You can add water to the glue to make it easier to put on a thin layer.

Along with stone, mud and animal parts, wood was one of the first materials worked by early humans. Microwear analysis of the Mousterian stone tools used by the Neanderthals show that many were used to work wood. The development of civilization was closely tied to the development of increasingly greater degrees of skill in working these materials.
