The legal TERM is usually negligence. There is no case number for a crime. A case number identifies an individual case before a court. I think you mean the specific statute that covers negligence. The statute will be different in each state (country?). Even in a given state, there are multiple types of negligence that are probably covered by different statutes.

the legal term for injuring another through negligence is "tort". There is not a case that established tort law. It is a part of the English Common Law that the US adopted on independence from England.
