Why do they keep saying that this was the greatest upset? what does this mean.. i am talking about the Appalachian vs St.-Michigan game.

because no top ten division 1-A team should EVER lose to the champion from 1-AA.

This was the first time in history a Football Championship Subdivision team — formerly I-AA — beat a team ranked in The Associated Press Top 25. Appalachian State is a smaller school in a lower division that typically does not attract the best high school athletes in the country. Michigan was ranked 5th.

Because no ranked d1 school ever lost to a d1aa school. The fact that some had michigan as a nation champion contender is another reason. The main reason is because Vegas didn't even have a line on the game the odds were so long.

No Division I-AA team had beaten a team ranked in The Associated Press poll from 1989-2006, and it's unlikely that it had ever happened before. The Division I subdivisions were created in 1978.
