You need to be willing to spend time... LOTS of time on maintaining and training it. You need money, you need to know what kind of horse you want then research what there favorite foods are. You need to study diseases and illnesses so you know how to prevent them. You need to have space for it to roam around, sleep, graze ect...

Do lots of reading before you get a horse. They are big lovely animals, but are very fragile when it comes to health. They need to eat every day and they poop every day and you need to keep them fed and clean. They require lots of vet time and feet trimming. They get sick in a minute with colic and you can be up all night walking and keeping them on their feet. Then there is pasture space to pay for. and equipment, saddles, blankets, bridles, etc.
But there is a lot of joy and lots of love. But don't get a horse if you do not have the time and money to take care of a horse. Go volunteer at the ASPCA in your area. But ask if they have horses, some DO NOT. Volunteer at a stable just to be around them for a while before you buy. It's not fair to the animal if you do not know how to care for it. You can't just put out some food and a cat-box and leave it for days.
